What to avoid writing

Don't compare illnesses. Stories about someone else with the same condition rarely help.

Avoid medical advice. Leave treatment to their doctors.

Skip "at least". Phrases like "at least it's not worse" can feel dismissive.

Don't push for updates. Let them share what they want, when they want.

When someone loses a loved one, see our sympathy card messages instead.

What do you write in a get well soon card?

Keep it warm and simple: "Thinking of you and sending lots of love. Get well soon." Add an offer of practical help if you are close.

What do you write to someone who is seriously ill?

Focus on care and support rather than recovery: "Thinking of you every day. I'm here for anything you need."

What should you not say in a get well card?

Avoid comparing their illness to someone else's, giving medical advice or saying "at least it's not worse".
