Writing the Christmas cards is one of those festive jobs that sounds lovely until you are sitting at the kitchen table with a stack of thirty cards and no idea what to say beyond "Merry Christmas". This guide collects Christmas messages and wishes for every name on your list: family, close friends, colleagues, neighbours and the people you only hear from once a year. Copy a message as it is, or use it as a starting point and add a line that only you could write.

Heartfelt Christmas messages for a card
When you want to write a little more — for your parents, a best friend or someone who has had a difficult year — a longer Christmas card message says what a quick text can't.
Christmas always makes me think about how lucky I am to have you. You've been there through the busy weeks and the hard ones, and I don't say thank you nearly enough. I hope this Christmas gives you everything you give everyone else: warmth, kindness and a lot of laughter. Enjoy every minute — and save me a mince pie.
This year has been a lot, and you've handled all of it with more grace than you give yourself credit for. I hope Christmas brings you real rest, people who make you feel at home and a few moments where you can simply sit and enjoy the lights. You deserve a gentle, joyful season and a New Year that treats you well.
To my wonderful parents: thank you for every Christmas you made magical, from the stockings at the end of the bed to the burnt sprouts we still talk about. Now it's my turn to wish you a peaceful, happy Christmas with your feet up. I love you both very much.
Even though we're miles apart this Christmas, you're in my thoughts every day. I'll raise a glass to you at dinner and look forward to the day we can celebrate together again. Until then, have the merriest Christmas — and keep your phone close, because I'll be calling.
Thank you for being the kind of friend who turns up with soup when I'm ill and wine when I'm celebrating. Christmas is all about the people who make life better, and you're right at the top of my list. Have a brilliant Christmas.
Funny Christmas messages
For friends with a good sense of humour, a funny Christmas message is often the one they remember.
Merry Christmas! May your turkey be moist, your crackers be loud and your relatives be on their best behaviour.
I asked Santa to bring you something amazing this year, but apparently I'm not allowed to fit in the sack. Happy Christmas!
Wishing you a Christmas with more presents than washing-up.
This card comes with a free pass to have a third helping of pudding. Use it wisely.
Happy Christmas! Remember: calories consumed in December don't count. That's science.
May your Christmas jumper be cosy and your family quiz be won by you, for once.
Here's to a Christmas spent arguing about Monopoly rules. Love you really!
Christmas verses for cards
A short verse adds a festive touch to a handmade card or a gift tag. These Christmas card verses are written to fit neatly inside a standard card.
The fire is lit, the tree is bright,
The stars are out on Christmas night.
Wherever you are, near or far,
We're wishing joy to where you are.
A little peace, a little cheer,
The ones you love beside you here,
A table full, a heart set free —
That's our Christmas wish for thee.
Snow on the rooftops, lights in the hall,
Love and laughter for one and all.
Merry Christmas, warm and true,
From all of us to all of you.
May every candle, every song,
Remind you that you still belong.
Merry Christmas, my dear friend —
Here's to joy that has no end.
How to write a Christmas card message
Not sure where to start? These quick tips help you write what to put in a Christmas card without overthinking it.
- Open with their name. "Dear Sam" or "To Grandma" makes even a short message feel personal.
- Mention something from the year. A new house, a new baby, a great holiday or simply "all those Sunday walks" shows you were paying attention.
- Match the tone to the person. Heartfelt for family, warm and light for friends, polite and friendly for colleagues.
- Look ahead. "Can't wait to see you in the spring" or "Let's book that lunch in January" gives the card warmth beyond the season.
- Sign off with care. "With love", "Warmest wishes" or "All the best" — choose the one that fits how close you are.
- Post in good time. Royal Mail publishes its last recommended posting dates each year; second-class deadlines usually fall in mid-December, and international dates are earlier.
Christmas traditions in the UK
Christmas in the UK has its own rhythm. Many families decorate the tree in early December, open advent calendars every morning and finish the term with a school nativity play. Christmas Eve might mean a carol service, a film on the sofa and a mince pie left out for Father Christmas.
On Christmas Day, presents come first, followed by a roast — usually turkey with all the trimmings, from pigs in blankets to Brussels sprouts — and Christmas pudding with brandy butter. Crackers are pulled, paper hats are worn (whether people like it or not) and the King's Christmas message is broadcast at 3pm.
Boxing Day on 26 December is a bank holiday dedicated to leftovers, long walks, football and the sales. Then comes the quiet week before New Year's Eve, when nobody is quite sure what day it is.
