Mother's Day Messages: What to Write in a Mothering Sunday Card

Mother's Day messages for Mum, Nan, step-mums and new mums — heartfelt card wishes, short texts, funny lines and messages from children, plus the date of Mothering Sunday 2027.

In the UK, Mother's Day is Mothering Sunday — the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday. In 2027 it falls on Sunday 7 March, much earlier than the American Mother's Day in May. Whether you're writing a card to your mum, your nan, a step-mum or a friend who's just become a mum, here are Mother's Day messages to help you say thank you.

  1. Breakfast in bed — tea, toast and a handmade card are classics for a reason.
  2. Flowers — daffodils and tulips are perfect in early March.
  3. Sunday lunch — book early, as pubs and restaurants are busy on Mothering Sunday.
  4. A walk together — spring is just starting, and time together is the best present.
  5. A phone or video call if you live far away — schedule it so she can look forward to it.
